Kate Swanson is the founder of VT-based interior & architectural design practice. Kate's studio is a workshop where she pushes the boundaries of design, testing, researching, and advancing her work. Inspired by history, contemporary culture, and the tension of pre- and post-internet artistry.

Design Process

‍

P1 - listen, take notes, research, explore

‍

Each project starts with active listening and learning about who my clients are. What they like and, more importantly, sometimes what they don't. I brain dump all my notes after meetings and compile initial ideas to research & explore visual references.

Part 2 - collect, edit, isolate, anchor

‍

I dig through digital and analog references. I let myself go wild and grab every possible idea, and I edit, edit, edit. I like to take time away for at least a day or two before I anchor the design and assign a name.

Part 3 - design, draw, consider, elevate

‍

Next schematic design, interior architecture, finish, fixture, furniture, and accessory selections. I typically oscillate between the imagery & the drawings & the selections. It's circular.

Part 4 - collage, communicate, present, connect

‍

To communicate, I use digital & analog collage materials. It's always an adventure, and I love the feeling of thinking on my feet.
