Meet Cherish Rosas, founder of Domícolo Studio, an interiors focused design workshop dedicated to thoughtfully fusing function and storytelling. Design narrative is the keystone to our impact. Cherish believes spaces can and should embody who we are while fostering how we live, and everyone should feel represented and nurtured in their most intimate respite - home. Making design services accessible to everyday people is a primary driver for Domícolo; from idea starter vision boards to space planning to full scale interiors projects, Cherish's shop offers a creative menu of services tailored to bring you one or ten steps closer to your desired environment.
Domícolo - a portmanteau - is a name derived from two Latin words: 'domus', meaning 'home', and the verb 'colo', meaning 'to live in'. Therefore domícolo is the intersection of home and inhabitant; the dwelling and the dweller.
I always start with language. "What does the brick want to be?" Louis Kahn famously asked this question, and I imagined the brick responding, "I wish to be unearthed; authentically sturdy; everlasting." I choose a narrative for each design; crafting a story as I collect imagery from physical publications or Pinterest. Storytelling shows up in the textures, art, color palettes, and materials I choose. It's a mosaic coming together tile by tile, or brick by brick. - Cherish Rosas
Design and writing have this process in common. Draft, edit, revise, iterate, add, subtract, hook, rhythm, flow. Design storytelling is authoring an experience for the main character: the inhabitant. How do they live? What do they love? What tangibles bring them joy? What are they passionate about? The more I know, the closer I can tailor a dwelling to align with the dweller. After I collect, I collage. These collages are playful, but they also inspire color schemes and prominent textures or materials. I add in imagery of existing product and storyboard them along with product I introduce to the scheme to see if they complement each other like characters sharing a plot.
And then, once the narrative is compelling and complete, we publish. I love to create a look-book as a digital keepsake, but first I use Canoa to give a tour not only through the finished design, but through the process. Process is my favorite part of any creative endeavor, and it's an opportunity to exhibit the thoughtful approach to someone's needs and aspirational vision. I had a client who said, "I feel so seen" when I took her through her canvas. That's how I want every client to feel.
